Lviv – the forgotten center of Europe – An exhibition by Rainer Enke in the Nikolaikirche Potsdsam

Lviv is a city in western Ukraine, around 70 km from the Polish border. Even the most varied names Lviv, Lwów or Lemberg point to the checkered history of the city. Traces of its Polish and Austro-Hungarian past can be seen in the architecture, which combines Central and Eastern European, Italian and German styles. “In Lemberg the old Europe went down. The center of the continent became a black hole, only to be forgotten afterwards. Anyone looking for her today will find a wound that is still open. The history of Lemberg is the history of many Central European cities that were wiped out and depopulated by the great powers Germany and Russia.” Anyone who wants to understand history and the conflict between Ukraine and Russia that has continued to this day should read Lutz C. Klevemann’s book “Lemberg – the forgotten center of Europe”. I visited Lviv and the surrounding region in western Ukraine in 2018 and 2019 and was struck by the unbridled national pride, deep orthodox beliefs and striving for a modern state within the European community. The pictures on display should give a small impression of this still carefree time. Where until recently happiness and exuberance dominated the streets and squares with locals and tourists, streams of refugees are now shaping the street scene again.
Exhibition in the Nikolaikirche Potsdam from 1.Mai to June 6th 2022

„In Organis Veritas“ by Sabine Dobinsky has recently been installed in the entrance area of the pathology department at the DRK Klinikum Westend.

A small, exclusive photo series „In Organis Veritas“ by Sabine Dobinsky has recently been installed in the entrance area of the pathology department at the DRK  Klinikum Westend.
In masterfully placed light, the colour and black and white photos reflect the spectrum of the history of pathology. The pathologists, who otherwise tend to work in obscurity, provide an insight into their special diagnostic view: The organs contain the diagnosis that the pathologist brings to light – generally a diagnosis to benefit the living. The exhibition is ongoing.

STADTräume, Rainer Enke, 2020, Bildungsforum Potsdam

As if in defiance, the almost mindless „century step“ seems to stride through Potsdam’s centre. Only the epochal Nikolai Church seems to stand like a rock.
The subject of the exhibited photographic positions is the current emotional debate about urban development, which has taken place in the most diverse social epochs. How carefully do we treat old buildings and to what extent do architectural dreams justify their realisation? Potsdam is an example of this topic. Here I follow with interest the construction activities as well as the accompanying social discourse about Potsdam’s „new centre“. The reconstruction of the Garrison Church with its disastrous history, the demolition of the University of Applied Sciences and the resulting redesign of the Old Market Square according to historical models are examples of this kind of controversial debate. The architectural contrasts between different social systems could hardly be greater here in the smallest of spaces.
Using photographic means, I tried to depict the urban conflicts about the aesthetics of old and new architecture.
In addition to a digital camera, a simple camera obscura soon became a familiar tool for me. The long as well as the multiple exposures which are presented here were very much in line with my photographic ideas – but left little room for subsequent image processing. The surreal world of images shown in this exhibition was created in the field of tension of these architectural and social contradictions and will not be reproducible in this form in the future due to Potsdam’s urban development.
Newly emerging STADTräume… characterised by transformations and contradictions.

Social and distance, Kunst-und Projekthaus Torstraße 111, 2020

Social and distance are opposites. Social and distance are crisis. Social and distance are a way out and a challenge. Social and Distance describe the work in our exhibition. In the work “Relief” by Martin Tscholl we experience the ecological coexistence of lichens on sandstone, colored, playful and following a secret order. In her sensitive work „Im Bade“, Sabine Dobinsky portrays the beauty of the body that becomes visible through an inner attitude in studies that appear timeless. Ruslan Hrushchak approaches a woman’s body, full of love and amazement, full of strangeness – because it remains „your“ body, even if „she“ is his wife. In his latest work “orbis pictus”, Rainer Enke deals in a contemporary, artistic way with the book of the same name that was published 350 years ago in Nuremberg – the first book with which children were able to explore language and thus a new world through images. The scores of the Canadian composer Michael Matthews have moved away from the sheet of music, thrown the bondage of representation and cheekily begin a life of their own as abstract, photographed forms. Henning Willer observes how young people in rural areas learn to drive a moped, and thus the interplay of strength and control, of speed and standstill. The works “Current Traces” by the lecturer and artist Ludwig Rauch show in a poetic way how materials, structures, micro- and macrocosms are rearranged according to vibrations and impacts.
